Abstract

This paper is prepared to list the required competencies of academics who work in the field of social sciences in the light of literature and in the direction expert opinion and propose a competency dictionary for this area of the profession. With this kind of competency dictionary, it will be possible to develop competency based human resource processes such as recruitment, career planning, training and development, performance evaluation, and compensation. Although we notice that there are some competency classifications for different occupational groups in literature and practice, we could not meet any study for academicianship in the context of Turkey. In this direction, we listed the competencies that academics -who work in the social sciences field- should have in the light of the literature of competencies, competency based human resources, and academicianship and in the direction of expert opinions. In this competency dictionary we list 32 competencies. These competencies are listed in the light of an extensive review, and examined in three competency clusters as personal competencies, academic competencies and workplace competencies. In addition to this, definitions of the competencies are presented to reach the aim of competency dictionary and behavioral indicators of each comptencies are explained.
