Abstract

Credit rating issue is viewed as an important both fund demandants and the creditors that supply the excessive funds to market. In this study, it was aimed at measuring the credibility of food, drink and tobacco companies which are continously traded in Istanbul Stock Exchange. For this purpose, 18 financial ratios under 5 categories were utilized in current study. The financial ratios used in the determination of credibility were determined by making use of relevant studies, the questionnaire filled out by academic and expert opinions. Financial ratios obtained from the five year conglomerate financial statements were used to measure the credibility of companies (2011-2015). In this study, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method was used to determine the importance weights of financial ratios. Moreover, TOPSIS was used to obtain a credit score for each company. Due to the analyses held; among the financial ratios, it was determined that net profit margin and leverage ratio are the most effective variables. The credibility of the companies were ranked in accordance with the obtained scores. Accordingly, Konfrut Food, Turkish Tuborg and Ülker Biscuit were respectively determined as having the highest credibility. It can be said that this study will lead to banks and credit institutions to understand which financial ratios to focus on and in order to carry out more successful decisions in the stage of valuing customer’s credibility.
