Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of national culture on silence behavior of health professionals. National culture characteristics have been addressed in the dimensions of uncertainty avoidance and power distance posed by Hofstede (1980) whereas the concept of organizational silence has been handled in three different dimensions as "asquiscent silence", "defensive silence" and "prosocial silence" which are conducted in the study of Van Dyne et al. (2003). Cultural dimensions were measured by using the scale developed by Dorfman and Howell (1988). To measure the organizatonal silence dimensions, the questions of silence in Van Dyne's (2003) study were used. The data of the study was collected from a total of 153 doctors working as a research assistant in the medical faculty of Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon province. The data obtained from the study were analyzed by using the structural equation model. The results of the analysis revealed that the dimension of uncertainty avoidance has a negative and statistically significant effect on acquiscent and defensive silence whereas power distance showed a negative relationship only with prosocial silence.
