Abstract

The Salt Lake, which is located in the middle of Anatolia, inside the borders of Ankara and Konya, is an extraordinary natural inheritance, with its spectacular view and beauty. Also called as “The Wedding Dress of The Steppe”, Salt Lake also have an economic importance as it supplies a large portion of the salt that is produced in Turkey. With its high salt to water ratio, it is the second lake after the Dead Sea. Salt is very important to life. It has been a very important trade asset during the Middle Ages, and thus played strategic importance. Salt that provides the Earth comes from three resources; rocks, seas and lakes. Of course, the rarest and relatively most valuable salt is the lake salt. Eight percent of the salt that is produced in Turkey is used in meals whereas the remaining part is used as industrial input. Salt production and pricing has become a very important sector in our country. Therefore, it is very important to investigate the salt economically, which is used in many areas of the industry. In this study, an evaluation is carried out for the economic value that the Salt Lake creates for businesses of various sizes in Şereflikoçhisar region; the salt marshes of Koyuncu Kaldırım and Kayacık and other salt businesses in this region. Aim of this study is to determine the benefits of Salt Lake to the Şereflikoçhisar economy, in addition to purposing methods for the effective and sustainable usage of these benefits. Another aim of this study is to state the importance of Salt Lake, which is an important brand of Şereflikoçhisar, with using studies in the literature. In achieving this aim, secondary data driven basic research methods were used, in addition to the inclusion of empirical evidences.
