Abstract

Smartphones, which have become an integral part of daily life, are an important element in enabling individuals to more take part in the virtual world. Social media, which is particularly attracted by young people, has led to the emergence of a new phenomenon called of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). In the topic of FoMO, which is known to have more effect on university youth, the study done in the Turkish literature is very limited. The data of the study carried out in order to examine the prevalence of FoMO in university students were collected from 210 respondents. As a result of the research, it was determined that the FoMO prevalence was moderate level among the university students. Carrying a charger at all times, checking smartphone upon wake-up, spending time with smartphone before sleep, connecting to social media actively every day, checking smartphone at least 50 times a day, having a social media account for at least 7 years, membership in at least 4 different social media accounts, and spending at least 7 hours per day on social media were common behaviors among FoMOphobic individuals.
