Abstract

Very important benefits were expected from the Hamidiye Regiments, which started to be established in the 1890s. First of all, the UK, which supported the continuation of the territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire, changed its policy. This change accelerated the increasing foreign intervention and the Ottoman State had to deal with much bigger problems. One of the measures taken to combat external invasions and the harmful developments that may be instrumental to the imperialist ambitions has been the formation of the Hamidiye Regiments. The desired targets were to reorganize the tribes in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia, to benefit from the population with a significant number of military purposes, to ensure public security and order in the region, to employ the children of the tribal elders in the region after education in Istanbul, to provide continuity within the body of the Ottoman Empire where the external interventions were increased, to create a deterrent force against groups that tend to internal rebellion and etc. Although these objectives were attained relatively, the conflict between the tribes would bring some difficulties for the Ottoman State.
