Investigation of Demografic and Occupational Properties In Terms of Employee Silence

Abstract

It is aimed to determine whether employee silence differs according to demografic properties (gender, age, marital status, educational status) and occupational properties (type of hotel, department, position and duration of working). The research population consists of employees in various departments who working in 3,4,5 stars and apart hotels in Alanya. The research was conducted in the summer months of july and august 2013. However the research sample consists of 205 participants. Mann Whitney U Tests and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to determine whether employees’ silence perceptions differs according to demographic and occupational properties. As a result of Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis H Test, there wasn’t a significant difference in any dimensions of employee silence according to gender, marital status, working position, duration of working and age group variables. However, as a result of the Kruskal-Wallis Test conducted according to the educational status variable, the silence behaviors of the two-year degree graduates were high and whereas the silence behaviors of graduate employees were found to be low because of management policy and mentality. As a result of the Kruskal-Wallis Test conducted according to the department, there was a significant difference between the employees' silence perceptions because of remain silent after experience and useless activity belief and it was found that the employees in the sales & marketing department had lower levels of employees’ silence when compared to employees in other departments and employees who work in the human resources department had high silence behaviors. Meanwhile, according to the Kruskal-Wallis Test conducted according to the type of hotel,there was a significant difference employees’ perceptions regarding the fear of losing job because of issue of trust and isolation fear, fear of damaging relations, remain silent after experience and useless activity belief, management policy and mentality, lack of experience and knowledge in terms of demografic and occupational properties. In this context, it can be said that employees in 3-star hotels had higher silence behaviors than employees in 4-star hotels; employees in apart hotels had lower levels of silence than employees in 5 star hotels.
