Abstract

The foreign trade deficit became one of the most important problems for Turkish Economy particularly after the “24th January Decisions” which was accepted as the starting data for the openness and the transformation policies undertaken in the Turkish Economy. Related to the production and consumption structure of the economy, Turkish exports has always been less than imports over the period of 1980’s to today, thereby, creating persistent current account deficit pressure on the Turkish economy. Today it is widely accepted that the top priority for the Turkish economy is to remove economic uncertainties stemmed from foreign trade deficits while achieving a sustainable foreign trade deficits. Especially after the 1990s, a sharp increase in tourism revenues has played an effective role in reducing the pressure caused by current account deficits over the Turkish economy. Considering these developments, this study aims to examine the relationship between current account sustainability and tourism revenues employing the Turkish foreign trade and tourism data over the 1980-2016 period. The findings of the study indicate that tourism revenues have a positive and statistically significant effect on on the sustainability of the current account deficit in this period.
