Abstract

The impact of the inflation phenomenon on economic growth, which has been on the agenda for many years in Turkey, is still being discussed.Until the 1970s, inflation was thought to have a positive effect on growth. Empirical studies made in the following years have enabled the settlement of the idea that inflation affects growth negatively. In this study, the relationship between GNP growth rate and inflation indices (TÜFE, ÜFE and GDP Deflator) which representing economic growth has been tried to be determined by granger causality analysis by using 1939-2013 time series data in Turkey. According to the results, it is determined that TÜFE and ÜFE have no effect on economic growth and GDP Deflator is the cause of economic growth. From here it is concluded that the relationship between economic growth and inflation changes according to the selected inflation indicator. When the regression analysis was interpreted, it was determined that a 1% increase in inflation (GDP Deflator) decreased the growth by 0.15%.
