Abstract

In this study, the effects of trade openness and financial development on economic growth in the G-20 group, which is composed of countries with different development levels in economic terms are examined empirically in the context of new generation panel data analysis methodology for the period of 1994-2015. In the study of this respect, it is aimed to evaluate econometrically that the effects of trade openness and financial development on the differentiation of the long-term economic growth performances and/or development levels of the G-20 countries, which are grouped as developed G-9 and developing G-10 countries according to development levels. In the results of the study, it was determined that the effects of trade openness and financial development on economic growth in the G-10 group were positive direction and/but statistically insignificant, while the effects of trade openness and financial development on economic growth in the G-9 group were definied to be positive direction/statistically significant. However, in the study it was determined that the causality relationship between the degree of trade openness and the level of financial development and economic growth were stronger in the G-9 group than in the G-10 group. These results show that countries in the G-9 and G-10 groups have a significant influence on the differentiation of long-term economic growth performances and development levels in economic terms, the accumulation of physical-human capital as well as the differences at the degree of trade openness and the level of financial development with the current structure.
