Abstract

One can observe a debate as 'criticism of work' in the literature concerning relation of work and leisure. This debate critically evaluates the relation between work and different forms of human activities by locating the work within the historical development of capitalism and its contamporary tendencies in various forms. Certain parts of the critical rewievs put the antagonism between th socially constructed character of work and the 'multi activity' character of leisure which enables creative freedom in its center. These approaches develop their suggestions based on the 'new' trends of various work forms that revealed by contemporary capitalism. Another parts of the critical reviews emphasize the contradictory but holistic character of the relation between work and leisure instead of addressing it as an antagonism. These approaches are distinguished as 'capitalistic work critisism' rather than the work critisism and acknowledge both socially necessary work and off-work activities as human needs. In this study, the prominent arguments of aforementioned approaches will be evaluated by concentrating on the fragmentation of human activity in capitalism. Because this context is considered as crucial for the critics of ideas and practices which are the resources of the production of social inequalities.
