Abstract

A widely accepted definition of globalization is that it is the ongoing and accelerated integration of the globe in terms of human resources, capital, technology and services. A group of globalization antagonists can be claimed to be consisting of ethnocentric individuals. This individual judges ‘other’ cultures with his very own cultural identity, defined by lifestyle choices, traditions, religious beliefs and other cultural components. In this study, the students of Şırnak University are put under the lens in terms of their different levels of ethnocentric attitude and of ethnocentric evolution. The Generalized Ethnocentrism Scale (GENE) that was developed by Neuliep and McCroskey and in-depth interviews were utilized as methodological instruments. The research findings show that the average score of students’ ethnocentric attitudes is in the middle-low range and the ethnocentrism score inclines to decline with international experience. These findings could be deemed meaningful as they may show the ethnocentric attitudes of young adults and the influence of globalization on them who are destined to produce new generations.
