Abstract

Urbanization process that includes radical changes that occur in society’s economic, political, cultural, and social life with globalization besides bringing innovation and simplicity also brings many problems including immigration, crime, inequality, irregular settlements and unemployment. When problems such as immigration, crime, inequality, irregular settlement and unemployment addressed main cause is to be found is poverty. When poverty is examined in terms of causes and results it is found to be the root of the many problems such as crime, homeless children, domestic violence. Also when looked at the results it causes many problems such as disability, family breakdown and children driven to crime. Social policies and social work interventions are being developed and an important part of resolving problems. At this point, the definition of professional roles and functions of social workers is important for providing information on how the process progress and how the process of social work practice would run in healthy way. In this study, the process of urbanization and the concept of poverty will be examined and in this context the social worker’s connective, advocating, educating, counselling, case manager and social change agent roles will be evaluated. It is thought that in context of urbanization and poverty this study will contribute to social work studies and will be useful in guiding social workers and multi-disciplinary professionals in the implementation of the process.
