Abstract

Political instability can be defined as a set of phenomena or events that deviate from the normality that occurs legally or illegally in a political arena in a country. Legal transition from single-party government to coalition, government changes and constitutional changes; and at the illegal level, such phenomena as the coup, revolution, uprising and assassination are seen as elements of political instability. In this context, it is clear that the tourism sector will be affected by such negativities. Tourists can react in the form of postponing, canceling, or turning to other destinations for such negative development destinations. In this study, a questionnaire was applied to local and foreign tourists coming to Muğla in 2017 to determine relations between periods of political instability and tourism sector. The survey was applied to a total of 808 tourists, 403 of which were foreign tourists and 405 of which were native tourists, and were analyzed by using the SPSS 22 packet program. According to the results obtained, security deficit-terror is the first place both domestic and foreign tourists as a phenomenon that harms an tourism sector of an country. 80% of domestic and foreign tourists think that political instability affects the tourism sector. Two years after the year in which the phenomenon of political instability is experienced, the tourism sector is returning to 60-70% of its former level. Russian tourists, according to British tourists, hold more negative developments about destinations in their memory. Russian tourists, according to British tourists keep more of their memories adverse events related to the destination and are more sensitive to political developments taking place in Turkey.
