Abstract

Underdeveloped and developing countries/regions have more labour production factor in comparison to the capital factor. For this reason, labour-intensive industries are prominent in these economies, in line with the comparative advantage model in production. The important reason for this is the inadequacy of capital, information, technology, etc. The fact that the cost of labor is lower than the capital is an important reason to prefer the production structure. In particular, agricultural-based industries (i.e. textile, food industries), construction etc. have become prominent sectors in these economies. However, the sustainability of this model has an important risk and / or threat factor. As a result of the development of international trade, especially the competition between economies that can produce at a lower cost became very intense. Also in the Turkish economy, underdeveloped regions with labour-intensive industrialization are negatively affected by this process. In the line with this model, sectoral structure of Adıyaman province predominantly based on agriculture and agricultural industry for many years. Starting from the 1990s, especially in the textile sector, search for further developments have started. However, from the year 2000 onwards, textile sector also began to face problems. The solution depends on knowledge-intensive industrialization
