Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand the information asymmetry phenomenon in organizations in the context of interdisciplinary approach, and to reach a comprehensive examination about information asymmetry from a theoretical point of view. In accordance with this aim, firstly the concept of information asymmetry, models, and theories that form basic foundations of this concept are explained, then an information asymmetry framework for subordinate-superior relationships from the perspective of social exchange theory is introduced. In the presented framework, ‘trust in manager’ -predicted by social exchange theory- is considered as the main determinant of information asymmetry between subordinate-superior relationships. In this respect, firstly the effects of contextual factors such as organizational structure, human resource management policies and practices, organizational culture, expectations, trust tendency, self-efficacy are examined in the emergence of reliable manager behaviors. Then how these behaviors affect the development of trust in manager is emphasized, and finally the relationship between information asymmetry and trust in manager is examined. It is expected that this study will be a guide for academicians and managers to understand and manage information asymmetry.
