The Local Identity in The Age Of Globalization

Abstract

Globalization have caused unprecedented changes on people and goverments. On the government level, these changes show up both on the administrative structure and on the management approaches. On the personal level, it manifests itself as new processes and new experiences in the daily life. During the process of globalization, goverments and people experience financial, environmental, social, political and cultural pressure. For the governments, cultural pressures rise concerning forming a national identity or not. Global culture aims to create a homogenous society by creating destructive effects on national identity. On the other hand, local identity is in the process of recreation as a concept which is created by the globalization and cultural pressures. This recreation process, firstly, occur as a result of globalization by time-space compression. Secondly, it finds itself a place as a result of anxiety which is caused by governments remain incapable on the environmental problems and security levels. Thirdly, it will take place as a result of arising of local dynamics which is caused by the decrease in the social welfare which occurs because of the decreasing dominance on economy of nation-states with the neoliberalism. Fourthly, it becomes prominent by the migration fact that is accelerated by globalization, by the identity protection and reconstruction of local identities of those who migrated. Fifth and the last, it gains importance by the “metropole dilemma” concept of Berner. As a result, local identiy, plays a part both oppose to global identity between all the contrasts that is brought by globalization; and at the same time it takes sides with it.
