Abstract

Glass ceiling syndrome can be defined as obstacles and artificial barriers that prevent women or the minorities from achieving higher positions in a hierarchical structure. The concept is generally used in the literature for female employee. This syndrome emerges as a barrier to female employees' career development journeys and refers to invisible glass ceilings that prevent women from reaching the top management levels. This study is a theoretical one to raise awareness and to show the negative effects of glass ceiling syndrome on performance in order to make female more involved in working life. In this context, the main aim of the study is to draw the boundaries of the effects of these syndromes on the performances of the female employees living in the labor market and to analyze them theoretically. According to the findings obtained from the literature surveys, it is seen that the glass ceiling syndrome increases the frustrations, stress, and lowers motivation, decreases productivity, increases intention to leave and absenteeism rates in female employees and thus affects their performances negatively.
