Abstract

Social workers should be aware of human diversity and effects of this diversity on humans. A person is under the influence of human diversity as soon as he/she is a part of a social group. Oppression and discrimination are part of this influence. Social work professionals are in the opinion of a person is at the risk of being discriminated or oppressed because of age, class, color, culture, disability, marital status, nationality, race, religion, gender and sexual orientation. Therefore this paper aims to gather information on oppression and discrimination in order to help and guide professionals working on this area. This paper contstructed as literature review and in this paper some information on opression and discrimination and then practices of social work on this subject havce been provided. Social work dicipline should be naturally against opresion and discrimination since it’s a profession of social justice and human rights. A social worker who defends people discriminated or oppressed should also be aware of the effects of them on human behaviour and psychology. Therefore social workers should have information on these effects.
