Abstract

The aim of this research is to examine the leadership orientations of preschool teachers and preschool teacher candidates. The screening model was used. The sample consists of 280 preschool teacher candidates studying in preschool teaching graduate program of 3 universities in İstanbul and 149 preschool teachers working in 28 preschool classes and independent preschool education institutions in 13 districts of Istanbul in academic years of 2016-2017. The data collection tools used in the research were Teacher Information Form, Student Information Form and ‘Leadership Orientation Scale’ developed by Bolman and Deal (1991) and adapted to Turkish by Dereli (2003). The results obtained from the research are as follows: Leadership orientations of the preschool teachers are higher than pre-school teacher candidates. Leadership orientations of pre-school teachers vary significantly by the reason for choosing preschool teaching profession, high school type they graduated, institution type they work in, university and program type they graduated; do not vary significantly by age and professional seniority. Leadership orientations of pre-school teacher candidates vary significantly by the reason for choosing preschool teaching profession; do not vary significantly by age, high school type they graduated and class level.
